About the journal

Columbia Scientist is an open-access journal of non-research scientific work by students at every level, anywhere in the world: argument, explanation, commentary, and art.

History and mission

Columbia Scientist was established in 2022 by the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal to highlight student work that defies the conventions of traditional scientific writing. Where CUSJ publishes original research and scholarly reviews, Columbia Scientist provides a platform for the writing around science: opinion editorials, briefings that make new discoveries legible, letters responding to published work, science art, and podcast scripts.

The journal publishes annually. Submissions come from high school, undergraduate, and graduate students around the world and are reviewed by an undergraduate editorial board at Columbia University.

CUSJ itself was founded in 2006 and remains Columbia's premier publication for original undergraduate research. Its editorial board also manages the Columbia Junior Science Journal and runs outreach across Morningside Heights and Harlem, including an annual Research Symposium each spring.

Open access

Columbia Scientist is free to read and free to publish in, with no submission fees and no publication fees. Copyright for published articles is retained by their authors under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence: anyone may copy, distribute, and transmit the work, provided the original author and source are credited.
